Blitz interview with Neda Grigorova, QA intern at Esri Bulgaria

Neda has been studying QA engineering at SoftUni for 2 years. It is interesting, however, that this is not her first professional education – in 2014, she graduated from the National Military University “Vasil Levski” – Veliko Tarnovo, majoring in “Organization and management of tactical units for logistical support”. And until the summer of 2022, he is an officer in the Bulgarian Army. Her interest in technology and the desire to develop in the IT field provoke her to make a career turn.
He also says about himself: “I exercise daily and experiment in the kitchen, trying to offer my family healthy, nutritious and at the same time delicious food. I read fiction and nonfiction, travel, and spend time outdoors at every convenient opportunity.”

You chose an internship at Esri Bulgaria because…

Esri is a global leader in geospatial technology and offers opportunities to work with the latest innovations in mapping and data analysis. This gives me a unique chance to upgrade my technical skills and competencies, as well as an opportunity for professional development. The internship, in a company like Esri Bulgaria, helps me gain valuable professional experience under the guidance of experienced specialists. Another aspect that guided me is that Esri is known for its commitment to sustainability and community contribution, which resonates with my personal values ​​and interests. An internship at a company that values ​​innovation and contribution to society is inspiring and enriching.

How would you describe the internship in up to 5 words?
Educative, motivating, practically oriented, perspective, interesting.
What are the 3 things you like most about the internship?
The three things I like the most are working with leading technologies. Being exposed to world-class software for geospatial analysis and mapping will allow me to develop technical skills and gain an understanding of the field. I also enjoy the mentorship and support that comes with my work as an intern. For me, the presence of proven professionals who willingly provide their experience and knowledge, and with the help of which I apply what I have learned in real projects, is extremely important. I am glad that on the way to my professional development, Esri Bulgaria gave me the opportunity to be part of such a team. Thirdly, I will mention the collaborative environment – the opportunity to work in collaboration with other interns and employees helps not only to exchange ideas, but also to a high motivation when completing the tasks – personally and as a whole.

What did you learn about GIS?
GIS is a vast and constantly evolving field. During these three months, during which I am part of Esri Bulgaria, I got to know and had the opportunity to work with Esri’s GIS software. This allowed me to peek behind the secrets of mapping, analyzing and visualizing geospatial data. I learned that there are various techniques that are helpful in making decisions in various fields such as urbanism, ecology, and others. I will mention GIS integration and applications. Understanding how GIS technologies integrate with other business systems and applications, for example for resource management or emergency response, and how this affects different industries is a new knowledge for me that enriches my professional arsenal.
The most important skills you learned during your internship are…
Methodology, prioritization of tasks, systematization of information, full and effective use of resources.
How do you feel as an intern in the Esri Bulgaria team?
I feel like part of the team. Motivated and inspired to contribute to projects.

How did you change from the person before the internship?

For me, as an officer of the Bulgarian Army until recently, concepts such as punctuality, accuracy in the performance of tasks, teamwork, mutual assistance and support are close to my essence, and at the same time they are represented in the company culture of Esri Bulgaria. This can only motivate me to continue following these interaction patterns. Professionally, working with leading technologies and collaborating with professionals in the field, day after day, broadens my view of the application of GIS in various sectors, including natural resource management, urban planning, crisis management, etc. I am inspired to work on new ideas/projects that were not my focus before.
What do you dream of?
I want to be part of the development of innovative solutions that really improve people’s lives. I also strive to be a role model for future generations and in particular for my child, showing that hard work and perseverance lead to success. Personally, I dream of improving my knowledge of German, starting to learn Italian, traveling more and getting to know different cultures

To whom would you recommend a career in GIS?
To anyone with a passion for technology and cartography. This sector is ideal for people who are curious, analytical and want to see concrete results from their work while contributing to a better future. Also, GIS offers opportunities for creative and innovative thinking, making them an attractive choice for technology-oriented individuals seeking a dynamic and diverse career.
Do you believe that GIS technologies are changing the world?
Yes, GIS technologies are indeed changing the world in multiple ways. They enable the collection, analysis and visualization of spatial and geographic data, which has a significant impact in various fields. GIS technologies provide tools that support a better understanding and management of complex systems and processes on our planet, leading to significant improvements in many sectors of the economy and public life. For example, when using GIS to manage natural resources such as water, forests and minerals, their sustainable use and environmental protection are supported. In urban planning and development, GIS can analyze various aspects of the urban environment, such as traffic, construction areas, availability of public services and infrastructure. This allows for more effective planning and improved quality of life. GIS also help in disaster and emergency response. GIS maps areas at risk of natural disasters, which helps prepare for and respond to disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes. In healthcare – GIS are used to track the spread of disease, analyze healthcare services and plan resources, resulting in improved public health.
