The winners in the National Map Contest “Stories, Projects and Dreams on a Map”

The official award ceremony of the winners took place on 13 November at Sofia Hotel Balkan.

The competition is organized by ESRI Bulgaria in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Culture and National Geographic Bulgaria on the occasion of International Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day and the celebration of the Esri‘s 50th anniversary – the global pioneer and leader in the development and deployment of Geographic Information Systems. It aims to encourage all young and grown-up explorers to tell their stories with GIS technology.

Within a month dozens of organizations and even more individual participants took the challenge and prepared printed and interactive maps with the specially developed applications to tell their unique stories that will last in time and inspire others. All maps were displayed at the 21st GIS Day Conference “See what others can`t”  in front of nearly 700 representatives from more than 200 organizations that took part in the forum.

At an official ceremony Colonel Ivan Inkovski, Chairman of the Military Geographical Service, Prof. Dr. Eng. Temenuzhka Bandrova, Vice-President of the International Cartographic Association, Eng. Georgi Gladkov, State Agency for Electronic Governance, and Evgeniа Karadjova, General Manager of ESRI Bulgaria – the official organizer of the GIS Day in Bulgaria, announced the winners and presented the awards in each of the categories of the competition.

In the “Print map” category the prize was awarded to Eng. Peter Ivanov from the Ministry of Interior for the map “Assessment of the fire damage near the village of Bryagovo, Haskovo district on 12-08-2019. ”

The awards for interactive maps went to:

Troyan Monastery “Uspenie Bogorodichno” in the “Travel and Tourism” category for the map “Pilgrimage Tour of the Troyan Monastery“.

Stoyan Petkov, Strumyani Municipality in the “History and Culture” category for the map “Maleshevo sings and dances”.

Rosen Ivanov, University of Architecture, Civil Eng. and Geodesy in the category “Sustainable Development” for “Map of Areas Suitable for Organic Beekeeping”.

Asparuh Kamburov and the team of students from the specialty “Surveying and Geodesy” at the University of Mining and Geology “St. Ivan Rilski” in the “Education and Science” category for map “Bachelor program Surveying and Geodesy. Who are we?“.

The “Map of the audience” award went to Elisaveta Stoev, a student at Sofia University” St. Kliment Ohridski“ for the map “Ecological construction. Is there a future in Bulgaria?

The winners in each category received a license for the world’s leading GIS software Esri ArcGIS Desktop;  one year unlimited access to the richest e-education center for geospatial technologies – Esri Training center; certificate from ESRI Bulgaria; a specialized atlas with contemporary GIS maps “Esri Map Book” and many more.
