At the beginning of the school year, Esri Bulgaria and the Ministry of Education and Science, in partnership with nearly 50 leading academic, professional, and media organizations, invite all teachers, pupils, and students to unlock their potential in the National Educational Contest “Exploring the World with GIS.”

This exciting competition offers everyone the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of modern Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and to create an impressive research project, educational resource, or digital story on a topic of their choice.

The contest is organized once again on the occasion of the official celebration of GIS Day in Bulgaria and is part of the “GIS in School” program.

Why take part?
GIS is much more than just a tool – it is an innovative way to learn, create, and tell stories. With the help of the intuitive and accessible applications of the ArcGIS Online platform, any idea – from lessons in history and geography to studies of the environment and social issues – can be turned into a captivating interactive story. Whether you already have experience with GIS or are just starting out, the ease of use allows anyone to create a project that is both educational and impactful.

Participation in the contest is open to everyone, from first grade through university, in one of four categories: Teachers, Pupils, School Teams, and Students. The only mandatory requirement is that each project must include at least one 2D or 3D map created with ArcGIS Online.

Winners will receive numerous cash and material prizes, as well as additional bonuses such as specialized training. For the first time this year, a People’s Choice Award will also be presented, giving everyone the opportunity to vote for the most impressive GIS project.

All projects that meet the contest requirements will be included in a virtual exhibition celebrating GIS Day 2025 – the largest event in the field in Bulgaria.

“Every year the participants – teachers, students, and university students – surprise us with their creativity, knowledge, and ability to apply GIS to real-world issues. What is most valuable is that through the contest they not only learn a new technology but also discover a new way to understand and change the world around them.” – Miglena Kuzmanova, Manager of Esri Bulgaria and Chair of the “GIS in School” Program.
