New GIS application helps fight the coronavirus in Bulgaria

Everyone can track the spread of COVID-19 in the country with a specialized web GIS application.

17 March 2020 - In support of the efforts to combat the coronavirus pandemic, ESRI Bulgaria has developed and is now maintaining a specialized web GIS application with up-to-date information on the spread of the dangerous virus in our country. The app represents a dashboard that gives a clear visual picture of the situation in the country, presenting information released by the Bulgaria National Coronavirus Operational Headquarters, along with a number of graphs and analyses.

On this website https://arcg.is/1LK1TW  everyone can access informed about the number of confirmed cases by settlements and districts in Bulgaria, as well as their health status. The data is summarized in several dashboards while being easily viewed directly from the map. Combined with this information, demographic statistics on the proportion of the elderly population over 65 are presented visually again by districts and municipalities.

The dashboard also offers an analytical component. On a separate panel, the scale of the spread of the virus in Bulgaria is shown – from the first case discovered on March 8 to the present moment. Among other data, a convenient logarithmic scale presents the spread of the virus, from which the rate of the infection with the new coronavirus in our country can be monitored daily. The app also offers a lighter mobile version https://arcg.is/14vqu9 for a quick overview of the basic information.

“It is vital to help now, at this very moment. In a state of emergency in which the rapid access to information and the ability to visually present and analyze diverse data and information are crucial, we at ESRI Bulgaria, as a responsible company, provide the tools of GIS technology to help maximize awareness in planning and managing the situation”, commented Evgeniy Karadzhova, General Manager of the company.

The GIS application follows the already established John Hopkins University interactive dashboard model, with which the world continues to monitor the global spread of COVID-19. Both applications apply the Esri GIS technology, which provides the much needed geographical context for the scope and intensity of the pandemic.

The COVID-19 GIS application will continue to be developed so as to provide other important spatial analyzes for the Bulgarian community.
