The participants sealed their message in a capsule for the contestants in the XXX Olympiad in Geography and Economics in our country
“Tale of Geography” contained the capsule opened in Yambol at the beginning of the 20th anniversary National Olympiad in Geography and Economics. The fairy tale is the message of those who participated in the race in 2014. With this symbolic manifestation, the final race of the geographical competition was launched. The event was hosted by The National High School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences “Academician Lyubomir Chakalov”, Sofia.
127 finalists from across the country competed on the first day of the National Round. Divided into four competitive groups, they solved a written test of 30 questions, followed by a multimedia test of 15 questions. At the end of the day, Assoc. Dr. Emilia Patarchanova, chairwoman of the national commission, announced the results and which 21 participants were admitted to the final round – solving a case study.
On 21.04. in the morning, the first seven participants in terms of number of points from the second (8-9th grade), third (10th grade) and fourth (11th-12th grade) competition groups presented their views and decisions on various cases. The first group demonstrated geographical competences on the case study “Overpopulation and aging”, the second group “Are natural risks a threat to Bulgaria and can we manage them” and the third group “Globalization – economic development – regionalization”. The participants had to analyze and synthesize information from various sources – text, maps, schemes, diagrams, etc., create their own maps and graphics, express a personal opinion and position. The case studies are aligned with the topics of the outline of the International Geography Olympiad. The first 14 participants after the calculation of the total result, who meet the requirements of the Regulations of the International Geography Olympiad, form the extended international team.
The winners of the national round of the 20th National Olympiad in Geography and Economics are:
• The first competition group of seventh graders has three winners: Lev Yurievich Belenkiy, MG “Dr. Petar Beron”, city of Varna, Martin Milenov Parvanov, OU “Vasil Levski”, city of Pleven and Ognyan Dobrev Dobrev, MG “D Peter Beron”, city of Varna. In second place is Stanimir Atanasov Stanchev, OU “Antim I”, town of Balchik. The third place is contested by Doichin Bozhidarov Tomov, OU “Petko R. Slaveikov”, city of Varna and Christian Martinov Dimitrov, SUEE “St. Constantine-Kyril the Philosopher”, city of Ruse.
• Second competition group: 1. Bozhidar Vladislav Rizov, 9th grade, PCMH, Sofia; 2. Evgeni Bogdanov Dimitrov, 9th grade, PPMG, Lovech; Iskren Hristov Ninov, 9th grade, “Geo Milev” Mathematical High School, Pleven
• Third competition group: 1. Georgi Emilov Kolev, PMG “Hristo Smirnenski”, town of Pernik; 2. Ivan Ivanov Madzharov, NPMG “Acad. Lyubomir Chakalov”, Sofia; 3. Gero Rumenov Todorov, PMG “Prof. Emanuil Ivanov”, Kyustendil.
• Fourth competition group: 1. Ana Lachezarova Pashova, 11th grade, 91. NEG “Prof. Konstantin Galabov”, Sofia; 2. Christian Danielov Petrov, 11th grade, PPMG “Nikola Obreshkov”, Kazanlak; 3. Nikolay Krasimirov Kostadinov, 11th grade, MG “Dr. Petar Beron”, city of Varna.
The medals, diplomas and subject awards were presented by Dr. Emilia Lazarova, Deputy Minister of Education and Science, Dr. Vanya Kastreva, Head of the Sofia-City Municipal Educational Institution and Mr. Ivaylo Ushagelov, Director of The National High School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences “Academician Lyubomir Chakalov”, Sofia.
Professor, corresponding member of the BAS Nikolay Miloshev accepted the message that the young geographers left for their followers. It will be stored in the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography of the BAS and will be opened at the 20th Anniversary Olympiad.
