Third award for “Road Infrastructure” Agency`s GIS system.
Sofia, 29 June 2016 – The Geographic Information System (GIS) for electronic administration services of the Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) was honoured with the highest international prize in the sphere of geospatial technologies. The system was awarded the prize for major accomplishments in GIS within the prestigious international competition “Special achievement in GIS”.
The competition was organised for 11 consecutive years in San Diego, California and distinguishes those organisations around the world who have made outstanding achievements in applying the most advanced geospatial technologies. Traditionally it is held during the Esri International User Conference – the world`s largest GIS forum which gathers more than 16,000 GIS users and nearly 500 organisations around the world. Within a week during the conference are held more than 300 technical sessions and specialised seminars that present the latest trends and best practices in geospatial technology as well as innovative GIS project around the world.
This year the RIA`s GIS system was awarded for special achievement in the application of Geographic Information Systems in the category “GIS projects outside the United States”. The system was selected among more than 100, 000 entries from around the world. All winners were announced by Esri president Jack Dangermond. On June 29 at the official award ceremony at the Congress Center of San Diego, Jack Dangermond personally handed the prestigious award to the Road Infrastructure Agency. The award took Zlati Peshev, urbanist and eng. Dobromira Zarankova, GIS expert in RIA.
The Geographic Information System of the Road Infrastructure Agency was implemented under the project “Provision of GIS-based electronic administrative services at the issuance of the permits for the citizens and creation of GIS registers for revenue activities”, funded under Operational Program “Administrative Capacity” 2007-2014. As a result of the implementation of the project was developed innovative Geographic Information System for the road infrastructure of Bulgaria based on the latest Esri ArcGIS technology. As part of the project, an electronic calculator was developed. By applying the calculator carries can determine the amount of the fee they have to pay for using the road network. On the other hand, the citizens and business have access to 4 electronic GIS-based public registers: for roadside advertising equipment; roadside commercial sites; underground and ground linear facilities; load carrying and gauge capacity and gauge capacity of road facilities. Contractor of the project is Esri Bulgaria Ltd.
This is the third prize for the project since last year`s award for GIS Project of the Year received at the annual GIS Day celebration. This year the system was also honoured for contribution in the development of Bulgaria infrastructure, in the category “Geographic Information Systems” at the INFRASTRUCTURE BULGARIA AWARDS 2016 competition.
