Sofia, 20 February 2019 – At an official ceremony in InterContinental Hotel Sofia on February 19, Mladen Petrov, Director, Communication and Information Systems Directorate, MoI, received the award on behalf of the Ministry for the implementation of the first of its kind in Bulgaria comprehensive departmental Geographic Information System for Criminal Analyzes, Crisis Management and Border Control. The award was presented by Atanas Temelkov, Chairman of the State e-Government Agency.
“This award is a recognition both for the high level of this project and for the overall expertise of the Ministry of Interior in the implementation of systems in service of our country,” said Mladen Petrov.
The awarded project “Development of Geographic Information System for MoI Data Visualization and Crisis Management” was implemented by ESRI Bulgaria under the European Union’s Internal Security Fund, based on world-recognized GIS technologies.
“The MoI’s GIS system is based on the ArcGIS platform used by The European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) and the European Commission to ensure a high level of interoperability and sustainability,” said Evgenia Karadjova, ESRI Bulgaria CIO, the leading GIS company in Bulgaria, and added: “For the first time in Bulgaria with this project, the Ministry of the Interior implemented the world latest GIS technological capabilities for 4D spatial-time analyzes and real-time system and data integration for the needs of border control, crisis management and criminal analysis. “
The Geographic Information System of the Ministry of Interior allows the performance of powerful analyzes while supporting the efficient resource planning and management in the ministry. The platform ensures integration with different information systems and registers, video surveillance systems, mobile tracking systems, etc. with pre-authorized access.
A special focus of the project is the patrol-post subsystem. It is designed to support border protection activities as well as real-time data integration. Another applied innovation is the creation of a special 4D cube for spatial-time trend analyzes.
More than 200 ministry employees from the General Directorate “Border Police”, the General Directorate “National Police”, the Analysis and Policies Directorate, the GIS Directorate and others have been trained to use the system.
Over 20 projects were nominated in the prestigious competition “IT Project of the Year”, organized for the 15th consecutive year by ITC Media and Computerworld Bulgaria.
