NATO Informs the World about its Activities by an Interactive Web GIS Map

A web map based on Esri technology allows everyone to monitor NATO`s missions, operations and partner relationships.

Sofia, 11th of June 2014 – The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has just released the first-of-its-kind interactive, multimedia web GIS map based on Esri`s GIS software, which depicts the activity of the organization. NATO on Duty allows everyone to observe the missions, operations, and all other aspects of the Alliance’s work in the world. A rich gallery of video highlights and feature stories about NATO members and the organization`s command structure is also integrated in the map.

“We decided to develop an interactive web GIS map, because only in this way we can illustrate to the general public the wide-range of NATO’s work, both in terms of geography and in terms of the activities we carry out “, says Pino Nobile, Geo Section head at NATO headquarters. “The map is intended to show people in a simple, easy-to-understand, and graphic way what NATO does, and why we do it”.

For the development of the map, NATO chose Esri’s cloud GIS platform ArcGIS Online, because it provides intuitive and easy-to-use tools for creating, publishing and sharing GIS data and functionality.
