Sofia hosts an International Geodetic Forum

FIG Working Week 2015 started with a high-level official opening ceremony.

Sofia, May 19, 2015 – The Working Week of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) – one of the largest events in the field of geodesy in the world, was officially opened yesterday in Sofia by Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova and the Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Nikolay Nankov. The event this year is held under the motto “From the wisdom of the ages to the challenges of the modern world” with the support of Esri, Inc. – the world’s leading geographic information systems company.

During the official opening of the prestigious event, more than 1500 participants and visitors from nearly 80 countries worldwide were welcomed by the Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Lilyana Pavlova in short video message, the Executive Director of the Geodesy, Cartography and Cadastre Agency Svetoslav Nakov, the FIG President Chryssy Potsiou, and the President of the Chamber of Graduated Surveyors Angel Yanakiev.

Main emphasis in the afternoon agenda at the first day of the conference was the workshop of Esri, Inc., in which Brent Jones, Global Manager, Cadastre, presented Esri GIS solutions for Leveraging standard data models such as the Land Administration Domain Model (LADM) and commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) data and technology. The team of ESRI Bulgaria also took part in the prestigious event and made live demonstrations of the ArcGIS platform, Esri specialized GIS solutions for cadaster, surveying, etc.

FIG Working Week will continue until May 21 at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia and by the end of the event more than 400 papers will be presented. On May 20 the event will open its doors for visitors of the accompanying Cartographic exhibition that can be seen for free.
