The GIS of Natura 2000 was awarded as the IT Project of the Year

The GIS for Natura 2000 of the Ministry of Environment and Water, developed by ESRI Bulgaria, was selected for the IT Project of the Year. 

Sofia, 20th of February 2014 – The project received the highest recognition in the category “Administration” during the ceremony of the 10th anniversary award ceremony of the Computerworld newspaper “IT Project of 2013″.

“The award proves that when the Ministry took the decision to build the system was on the right track. Thanks to ESRI Bulgaria, without whose expertise, I would not hold this award in my hands. “, said Mihail Mihailov, Director of “Protected Areas” Department of MEW.

“The implemented GIS for Natura 2000 in the Ministry is among the leading such systems in Europe, both in technological and functional aspects. Except that it solves strategic national objective for protection of natural areas, the system puts Bulgaria in the forefront of countries that have successfully implemented the recommendations of the EU’s environment directives – contribution with which we are extremely proud of. “, said Evgenia Karadjova, CEO of ESRI Bulgaria.

ESRI Bulgaria, as the leading member of the consortium NATURA-GIS developed and implemented in the Ministry and its structures Unified Information System (UIS) for protected areas of Natura 2000 ecological network. The system is built on Esri ArcGIS platform. Besides powerful back-office functionality which supports preservation, planning and management in the framework of the ecological network. For the successful implementation of the project were processed, validated, verified and integrated terabytes of data, which were subsequently charged in a total 988 layers in the geodatabase system. In addition, for the purposes of applying the EU INSPIRE Directive was built a specific geographic database with harmonized data published via special Geoportal.

The system includes public application, providing public access to current information for the spatial scale, location and functional status of protected areas. This ensures transparency in the conduct of administrative procedures. The public part of the application is available at: natura2000.moew.government.bg

More than 24 projects and the companies which implemented them participated in the edition of the competition organized by Computerworld newspaper.
